Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand is one of the best centre-backs in Manchester United’s Premier League history. The former footballer, the now-turned pundit, surely knows a thing or two about captaining Manchester United and leading the team to success. In his latest episode of his Five YouTube Channel, Rio Ferdinand has suggested Harry Maguire to change his style of captaincy and keep a hold on his players.
Harry Maguire got Manchester United’s armband barely six months into his new club, as Ashley Young departed in January. Since then, there has been a fall in Maguire’s own performances and he hasn’t been a good leader to the Red Devils as well. Rio Ferdinand in his YouTube channel has asked Maguire to do things differently for the betterment of the team.
Ferdinand said: “We’re lacking confidence in certain areas, we gain a bit of confidence in midweek but do they get too confident? I saw Maguire saying they were patting each other on the back too much. Get a hold of that team – he’s the captain. I hope he’s getting in there and telling people ‘listen, we aren’t the finished article, we’ve got loads to do, pull your socks up.”
Harry Maguire, as a captain, needs to stamp his authority on the Manchester United squad and earn respect from his teammates. His leadership qualities haven’t been on the showcase for the Red Devils, and Solskjaer would hope for him to get it right as soon as possible. The captain’s armband might also be given to Bruno Fernandes if Maguire doesn’t improve his performances, let alone leading the team.
