Harry Maguire has had a poor start to his season as the Manchester United captain has been shambles at the centre of United’s defence. His misery continued in England colours as well, as he got sent off against Denmark a couple of days ago in the Nations League. In the last edition of his show at BT Sports, Rio Ferdinand has urged Solskjaer to drop Harry Maguire for the game against Newcastle.
Rio Ferdinand has been a passionate Manchester United supporter ever since he joined the club back in the day. Ferdinand became one of United’s best centre-backs and Harry Maguire was thought to follow the same footsteps. Maguire signed for United as the world’s most expensive centre-back but his performances lately don’t do justice to the huge price tag.
Looking at Maguire’s form, Ferdinand said: “In these situations – that I’ve been in as well, you sometimes need to be taken out of the oven. Ole has a big job on his hands and I think quite an important role to play in this. Whether maybe it’s time to give him a little rest, let him gather himself and build that confidence back up.”
It might be wise to keep Maguire out of the starting XI as another bad game might impact his already damaged morale. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to be street smart in such a scenario, as his job might be on the line depending on the result of the next few games. Maguire should also take some time off and reflect on what all has gone wrong for him in the last months.
