Gary Neville disappointed by Jesse Lingard staying put at Old Trafford

Jesse Lingard staying put at Old Trafford beyond this summer’s transfer window has left Gary Neville disappointed with the United legend saying the playmaker should have head out the exit door.

The England international’s future had been subject to much speculation over the course of the recently concluded transfer window with Lingard attracting interest from a number of clubs across the country.

His former loan destination West Ham United emerged as the frontrunners in the race to land his signature with David Moyes expected by many to launch a deadline day swoop for the 25-year-old Lingard.

Lingard, however, was retained by United who instead chose to sanction the departure of Dan James to Leeds United in the final hours of the summer window.

Gary Neville, while speaking to Sky Sports News, said he would have preferred Lingard to have signed for another club in the transfer window where he could have been promised a regular berth on the starting teamsheet.

“I’m disappointed Jesse Lingard hasn’t left.”

“He’ll get a few games but I think he had something going at West Ham that meant he was standing up as a really good player and to go back into being a squad player again, it’s disappointing.”

“Sometimes you need to fly the nest and go.”
