Mason Greenwood had a great last season as the 18-year old scored 17 goals in all competitions for Manchester United. His performances for the United side earned him his first call-up to the England national squad for the Nations League games. But it was earlier reported that Greenwood, along with Foden, were dropped off the squad after breaching isolation rules in their Iceland hotel.
Greenwood made his debut a couple of days back, coming on late against Iceland which didn’t allow him to make an impact. But with him breaching the rules, Gareth Southgate confirmed the dropping out of Greenwood and Foden as a safety as well as a disciplinary issue. In the wake of the hour, Greenwood has issued a statement admitting his mistake.
The statement by Greenwood was: “Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused. It was irresponsible of me to break the Covid-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public. In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.”
He also added that “Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake. I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from.” Reportedly, Greenwood and Foden were also fined £1,360 for the breach of pandemic rules.
