Jesse Lingard is expected to extend his stay at Manchester United beyond the January transfer window, as the midfielder is eager to compete for a place in Ralf Rangnick’s plans.
Lingard has yet to start a Premier League match this season, with his eight appearances all coming as substitutes, and his minutes restricted to cup tournaments.
The 29-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he’s been linked with moves to Newcastle United and West Ham in the coming months after impressing during a loan spell at the latter last season.
Lingard scored nine goals in 16 games for the Hammers, but since returning to Old Trafford last summer, he has struggled to reclaim his spot with the Red Devils.
According to The Athletic, the midfielder will try to win over new manager Ralf Rangnick, who has been hired as an interim manager until the conclusion of the season. Newcastle is now uninterested in a deal, according to the report.
Lingard and United are currently not in talks over a new deal, and the England international is free to negotiate a pre-contract arrangement with other clubs from January.
After losing his place in the England squad for the second time, Lingard will be looking for regular first-team action.
Following his efforts for West Ham last season, he returned to international duty ahead of Euro 2020 but was dropped from Gareth Southgate’s most recent selection due to a lack of minutes in 2021/22.
