Kobbie Mainoo: From Toddler Talent To England Squad

It is amazing how Kobbie Mainoo went from being a little child who loved football to being one of England’s best hopes for Euro 2024.

The 19-year-old midfielder for Manchester United who has been rising quickly in the football world was recently included in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary 33-man squad.

From an early age Mainoo’s passion for football was apparent. Steve Vare his first coach remembers clearly the day he saw Kobbie play when he was only four or five years old. “Although he was thin he was swift and strong” Vare told the Mirror.

I would try to challenge him by putting all of the better players on the other team but he would evade them and score goals.

Early Stage

Kobbie was born in Stockport the youngest of three children to Ghanaian parents Felix Mainoo and Abena Herold.

He has a brother Jordan Mainoo-Hames who made an appearance on Love Island in 2019 and two sisters Ama and Elfia.

Although Kobbie’s sister Elfia manages BlackOwned Studios in Manchester which provides support to small businesses owned by individuals from BAME backgrounds, Kobbie’s mother works as a secretary at her partners construction company.

From an early age Kobbie’s football talent started developing and in his early football games he would wear an England shirt with pride. When he was just seven years old Manchester United scouts noticed his skills and recruited him in the United academy. His first professional contract was signed by 17 and he was assigned to the 2022 squad.

Praises

Mainoo’s talent and diligence have been commended by retired England players Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

His place as a rising star in English football was further cemented in March when he made his debut for the country against Belgium thanks to his outstanding performances. Key to his success has been Mainoo’s groundedness and humility.

When TV reporters inquired about Kobbie’s origins he proudly revealed that he got his start with Cheadle and the Gatley Junior Football Club in the sports hall of a nearby high school. This was a touching moment for Steve Vare, his first coach.

Though Mainoo’s call-up to the provisional squad created much anticipation there were a few unexpected outcomes.

Many fans and commentators were taken aback by the decision to exclude Marcus Rashford, his Manchester United teammate from the 33-man group. More build-up to the June 14, start of the Euros, will come from a further reduction of the squad. As Kobbie Mainoo prepares for the possibility of representing England at Euro 2024, his story might serve as an inspiration.
