Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw plans to receive a new five-year extension as his current contract nears its end.
Erik ten Hag has not indicated what he will do about the future of the defender, whose contract is slated to expire in the summer of 2023. The 27-year-old’s performance at United has been inconsistent, and he has missed a significant amount of time due to long-term injuries. Shaw, who has been in Manchester since 2014, is seen as a regular player of the squad and when fit can give the team a big attacking threat.
He has also played a significant role for England’s national team, and he gave the Three Lions the lead against Italy in the Euro 2020 final last year. Shaw will probably be called up to represent the team at the upcoming World Cup competition.
According to Jacque Talbot of The Times, his future at Old Trafford depends on his injury history and the progress of Tyrell Malacia.
Malacia, a recent Red who is keen to establish himself under Ten Hag and seek a spot in the starting lineup, offers a youthful alternative at left-back.
Another important factor in any future discussions is Shaw’s fitness record. United cannot rely on a fullback who will be available for only fewer portions of the season given their busy schedule.
