According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are keeping a close eye on the potential transfer of Birmingham City midfielder Tahith Chong as he moves closer to joining Luton Town.
Man United fans may recall the excitement surrounding Chong’s arrival from Feyenoord in 2016. The Dutch outfit believed they had a promising talent on their hands, but United swooped in to secure his signature.
There were high hopes that the young prodigy would flourish and become a key player at Old Trafford. However, he never quite fulfilled those expectations.
During his time at United, Chong made only 16 appearances for the first team and failed to score a single goal. Chong’s loan spells at Werder Bremen and Club Brugge did not bring him any closer to securing a place in the United first team.

As a result, he was loaned out to Birmingham City for the 2021-22 season. Chong had an impressive stint at Birmingham, leading to a permanent deal worth £1.45 million, which could potentially triple with add-ons.
United holds a 25% sell-on clause, which could prove significant as Chong nears a return to the Premier League. Luton Town has initiated discussions to sign Chong following their promotion to the PL.
However, they are unlikely to make extravagant signings this summer. They have already secured the services of Chiedozie Ogbene from Rotherham United on a free transfer, and Mads Juel Andersen from Barnsley is expected to join as well.
Chong’s versatility is an appealing factor for Luton, as he has demonstrated his ability to perform effectively in various midfield and attacking positions during his time at Birmingham.

If Luton were to be relegated to the Championship, Chong could still shine in that league. The financial details of the youngster’s potential move to Luton remain unclear, but Man United will certainly be monitoring the situation.
For United, a quarter of the total transfer fee or any subsequent profit from Chong’s sale would be a welcome boost during this transfer window. Moreover, it would be exciting to witness him consistently featuring in the Premier League, finally realizing his potential at the age of 23.
