Manchester United defender Phil Jones targeted by Benfica

Manchester United defender Phil Jones, who hasn’t played in nearly two years, might be offered a fresh start in what could be one of the most surprising moves of the January transfer window.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Jones, 29, is targeted by Portuguese club Benfica, who are looking for diverse defensive options as they try to return back to winning ways in the Portuguese Primeira Liga table, which they haven’t won in the past two seasons.

Man United manager Ralf Rangnick will allow players to leave in January in order to trim the squad down, as the squad is currently bloated with too many players who do not justify their wages.

Phil Jones has played above 200 minutes for our Under 23 team in Premier League 2 this season, however, his last appearance for the senior team was on January 26, 2020, in an FA Cup match against Tranmere Rovers.

Jones was a reliable defender for United after joining Blackburn as a teenager in 2011, appearing in 94 of his 165 Premier League matches throughout his first four seasons with the club.

Jones, who joined United more than a decade ago, has since become an outcast at the club, afflicted by injuries that have brought his career to a halt.

United is expected to accept a proposal from Benfica if one is made. And if Jones can restore his fitness and resume his playing career in a different setting, it is undoubtedly the best conclusion for all parties involved.
