According to Calcimercato, Manchester United are linked with a move for Juventus shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny this January.
The former Gunners keeper has been plying his trade in Italy with the Massimiliano Allegri-led Juventus team. The 32-year-old has been a key player for the Old lady this season.
After a poor start to the campaign, the club are finding their feet in the league and the goalkeeper deserves credit for keeping the back-line secured. United have been in the market for a new goalkeeper since David de Gea’s contract is set to expire this summer.
The Spaniard is yet to make a decision on his future, although the Red Devils have the option of extending his contract for another year.
Erik ten Hag is aware of the fact that the goalkeeper will be past his prime after a few years and the club needs a fresh change in front of the goal. De Gea has been playing well for the club in the past few months, but a lack of competition may affect his form in the future.
United are looking forward to signing a replacement in the upcoming transfer window. Players like Brighton and Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez and Porto’s Diogo Costa have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
However, Szczesny’s inclusion in the transfer wish list comes as a surprise. Even if the Polish goalkeeper has been able to replace Gianluigi Buffon in the squad, his age would be a major block as the club will need a young goalkeeper. Also, the Juventus keeper has 18 months left on his present contract.
Nevertheless, even if both the keepers have different destinies in the World Cup, they are already passed their prime age. United need a fresh player and the board will be looking forward to signing either Sanchez or Costa this January.
