Manchester United set to miss out on Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen

As stated by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United’s pursuit of Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen seems to be falling through, as the player is nearing a move to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The future of United’s current goalkeeper, David de Gea, is also uncertain. The Spaniard’s contract is set to expire at the end of the month, and there are concerns regarding his willingness to accept a pay cut from his current weekly wages of £375,000.

If De Gea departs on a free transfer, the club is considering Andre Onana from Inter Milan and Diogo Costa from Porto as potential candidates for the starting goalkeeper position in the 2023/24 season.

However, it appears that Verbruggen is likely to reject United’s offer and opt for regular first-team opportunities at Brighton instead.

The 20 years old keeper had a breakout season with Anderlecht, impressing with his reflexes and performance. He maintained a save percentage of 75 and did not concede any goals from outside the box.

Additionally, he showcased his passing abilities, completing an average of 30 passes per game, including nine long balls.

Despite his potential and ability to operate as a sweeper-keeper, it seems that Man United will not be able to secure Verbruggen’s services.

The Dutch goalkeeper has expressed a preference for regular first-team opportunities with the Seagulls, indicating that he aims to face bigger challenges in the future, potentially at a higher level.

While Verbruggen has demonstrated maturity beyond his years as a shot-stopper, United is now likely to shift their focus towards acquiring an experienced goalkeeper if David de Gea departs.
