As reported by The Metro, Manchester United tried to sign Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann even after knowing that the club were in talks to rope in Casemiro from Real Madrid.
The Brazilian international joined United in the middle of August and agreed to a five-year contract after Real Madrid approved a proposal of roughly £60 million for the midfielder.
Erik ten Hag was under a lot of pressure before Casemiro joined the team because of two losses to Brentford and Brighton. Given the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club, Ten Hag was also eager to strengthen the team’s attacking unit.
Due to a condition in Griezmann’s contract, Atletico Madrid only wanted to sell the French star for £40 million if he played more than half the games at United. Griezmann, who was then on loan from Barcelona, was having trouble getting playing time in the Spanish capital. United contacted Barcelona to see if they could negotiate a deal for the striker due to the uncertainty surrounding the Frenchman’s future.
Griezmann, despite being flattered by United’s interest, was content to stay in Madrid and made it clear that he wanted to stay in Spain.
Since then, Griezmann has finalised a transfer to Atletico, and he had a terrific World Cup campaign while playing in a much deeper playmaking role. In the midst of these rumours, United signed Wout Weghorst last week to strengthen their attack.
The team is interested in signing Harry Kane, although he is open to staying at Tottenham. Next month, the Spurs intend to have a meeting with Kane’s agents to discuss a new contract.
