Manchester United want £6 million for Sparta Prague target Matej Kovar

Sparta Prague had high hopes of reuniting with Matej Kovar, bringing him back to the Czech Republic. However, their confidence dwindled when Manchester United set a hefty £6 million price tag on the young Premier League player.

As per the Express, the significant asking price has put Sparta Prague’s plans to sign Kovar in doubt. The highly-rated goalkeeper was notably excluded from the club’s pre-season tour of the USA last week.

It was believed that United had intentions of sending Kovar out on loan again following his impressive performance during the 2022/23 season at Sparta Prague.

The decision to leave him out of the pre-season tour indicates that the club expected him to secure another loan move to gain further experience and development.

Kovar expressed his emotions through an Instagram post on Wednesday, informing Sparta Prague that he would not be returning to the club as initially expected.

This announcement came as a surprise, given that Sparta Prague had been convinced that Kovar, who had an impressive season with eight clean sheets en route to the Fortuna Liga title, would be back for another loan spell at the Epet Arena. The sudden change of plans left the Czech club and fans surprised and uncertain about Kovar’s future.

Sparta Prague’s hopes of securing the keeper for another loan spell were shattered when they discovered that United was looking to sell the goalkeeper instead of sending him out on loan again.

The Red Devils have set a price of £6 million for Kovar, a sum that is more than double what Sparta Prague can afford or is willing to pay for the player.

As a result, the club’s chances of bringing Kovar back to the club have been significantly hindered by United’s decision to sell him rather than loan him out.

United have released one goalkeeper, and it seems probable that they will sell a second one. The club has signed a new number-one goalkeeper, and there are strong rumours linking them with a young backup goalkeeper.

In summary, United are undergoing significant changes in their goalkeeping department, with departures and potential signings shaping their squad for the upcoming season.

Kovar had a successful season with Sparta Prague, playing a crucial role in their league title win and earning the accolade of the league’s goalkeeper of the season.

He made an appearance as a substitute in United’s pre-season match against Leeds United and showcased his ability to handle the ball well, even under pressure from opponents.

However, Erik ten Hag, is known for being specific and determined about players who fit his tactical system, and it remains uncertain if Kovar is part of his plans.
