Manchester United winger Antony removed from the Brazilian national squad

Manchester United winger Antony has been excluded from the Brazil national squad due to allegations of domestic abuse.

Initially, he was included in the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.

However, his former girlfriend made claims of physical assault against him during an interview with the Brazilian website UOL.

A statement issued by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) has confirmed his removal from the national squad.

“Due to the facts that became public this Monday (09/04), involving Manchester United striker Antony, that needs to be investigated. In order to preserve the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian National Team and the CBF, the entity informs that the athlete is withdrawn from the Brazilian National Team.

“To replace him, coach Fernando Diniz called Gabriel Jesus, who was pre-selected on a list of 36 players, sent to FIFA.”

UOL has published photographic evidence and message screenshots to support claims of domestic violence involving Antony.

These accusations have been reported to the authorities in Sao Paulo and Manchester.

The former Ajax winger has issued a public statement in which he denies the allegations, acknowledging that his relationship with his ex-girlfriend was tumultuous, but emphasizing that he never engaged in any physical assault.

This development represents a significant setback for Man United, who are still dealing with the aftermath of the Mason Greenwood incident.

United made the decision to part ways with Greenwood, even though charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The English international has since joined La Liga club Getafe CF in an effort to rejuvenate his career.
