Manchester United are exploring the possibility of bringing in an England international to pair with emerging midfield talent Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo has already established himself as a key player in United’s midfield since graduating from the academy, and now the club is looking to strengthen this area further.
The Red Devils have been busy in the transfer market, signing Joshua Zirkzee, who played for the Netherlands in Euro 2024, from Bologna despite they made it to the Champions League last season.
But Manchester United might be looking at even bigger stars now.
According to some sources, Matthijs De Ligt could join, and now, CaughtOffside says Adam Wharton is in United’s sights.
Wharton, who moved to Crystal Palace in January from Blackburn Rovers, might just be the right match for Mainoo in the midfield.
While Mainoo has become a regular fixture in the team, he has yet to find a consistent partner.

With Casemiro expected to leave this summer and players like Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen having shared midfield duties, Wharton might be the solution.
A skillful left-footer, the 20-year-old can play box-to-box and could complement Mainoo well, offering Manchester United a solid midfield foundation for the future.
Mainoo just set a record as England’s youngest player to reach a major tournament final. Wharton, though in the team, never played in the games.
His only time playing for his country was off the bench in a 3-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3.
CaughtOffside reports that Wharton might be an alternative target, with Joao Neves from Benfica being United’s primary focus.
However, Neves’ release clause is around €120 million, making negotiations difficult.
In contrast, Wharton could be available for a significantly lower fee, estimated at €30 million by Transfermarkt, and his contract with Crystal Palace runs until 2029.
Though signing Wharton might seem like a reactionary move based on his recent form, he could be an excellent partner for Mainoo.
However, having only recently joined Palace, and with Michael Olise already departing this summer, the Eagles might be reluctant to part with another rising star.
Therefore, this transfer could face significant challenges before gaining any momentum.
