Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes that Jadon Sancho is on the verge of being called the “worst signing” in the club’s history.
Sancho moved to United from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of around £73 million last year, but the 22-year-old has been hugely inconsistent since arriving at Old Trafford.
Due to an injury, the winger has missed United’s last three games in addition to being left off of England’s World Cup roster, which was released on Thursday. Parker believes Sancho might be one of United’s worst signings because of his big price tag and unwillingness to ‘challenge’ opposing full-backs.
As reported by the Sun, he said:
“To be honest I’ve never really understood why Man Utd paid so much money for Jadon Sancho. He has a lot of issues because he is never attacking full-backs, he is passing backwards and is not really challenging his direct opponent.”
“The way you play in Germany is completely different to the Premier League and it seems like he’ll never be able to adapt well enough to be a key player for United. If you look at the money the club paid for him, I would say he could end up being the worst buy in Manchester United’s history.”
Sancho had made a promising start to the season; the winger already scored two goals, just one less than he did the entire previous year. One of those goals was scored during United’s pivotal early-season match against Liverpool.
However, the former Borussia Dortmund star has failed to deliver and his chances of playing regularly could be further hampered. Sancho was signed by the Red Devils after watching his goal-scoring exploits for the German side. He scored 45 goals and provided 53 assists for Dortmund but the 22-year-old was unable to replicate similar numbers at Old Trafford.
With Anthony Martial working to return back to fitness, it would be no surprise to see Marcus Rashford being pushed to the wings and Alejandro Garnacho waiting for his opportunities.
Sancho needs to return back to his original form once the World Cup campaign ends.
