Manchester United have been dealt a double blow ahead of their clash against rivals Liverpool with two key players Pogba and De Gea ruled of the fixture.
The Frenchman, 26, is suffering from a foot injury that has limited him to two appearances since the end of August.
Paul Pogba has missed four of the last seven United games with an ongoing ankle complaint but had stepped up his recovery after warm-weather training in Dubai this week. He had hoped to be fit in time for Sunday’s clash but has now failed to recover in time.
United are hopeful Anthony Martial will be fit to start for the first time since he suffered a thigh injury in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on August 24. Martial scored two in three starts in August and could return to the center-forward role against the club whom he made a goalscoring debut against.
Goalkeeper David De Gea is also set to miss Sunday’s fixture after he required a scan after sustaining what appeared to be a groin problem in Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Sweden on Tuesday.
“David needs a scan,” Solskjær told Sky Sports. “I think he’ll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it’s one of those things.” Of Pogba, the Norwegian said: “He had a scan after the Arsenal game [at the end of last month] and maybe needed a few weeks’ rests in a boot so hopefully he won’t be too long, but he won’t make this game, no.”
No. 2 keeper Sergio Romero will step in to play his first league game in 17 months as a patched-up United face a Liverpool team looking to equal Manchester City’s record of 18 straight Premier League wins.
