Ralf Rangnick has ruled out the prospect of Edinson Cavani leaving the club in the January transfer window.
In recent weeks, the Uruguayan striker has been widely linked with a move away from the club, with Barcelona apparently interested in signing him.
Rangnick, on the other hand, has stated that he is still a “very essential player” in the team and has confirmed his intention to keep him.
While speaking to the club’s official website, Rangnick said:
“We spoke about Edi, and he knows that I will definitely not let him go. For me, he is a highly important player for the rest of the season, [we’re] still playing in three competitions so we will definitely need Edi. I would rather have another Edi on top of that but for me, it is clear Edi has to stay.”
Last season, Cavani had an injury-plagued debut season with the Red Devils, but he still managed to score 17 goals in all competitions. Extending his contract for another season was a no-brainer, but he has had a rough season due to injuries and competition for spots.
Cavani rarely started games under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Cristiano Ronaldo being an undisputed starter following his miraculous return. Rangnick, who prefers to play with two up front, has opened the door for Cavani. Under the German, he is now seen as a major player.
The 34-year-old came off the substitute to score a crucial equalizer against Newcastle United and then went on to play the entire 90 minutes in Burnley’s victory. He appears to be in line for a long run in the starting lineup, and there appears to be no reason for him to leave this month.
Of course, the situation could change dramatically if a new manager is appointed. Cavani is expected to leave on a free transfer in the summer.
