Manchester United’s undisputed number one – David De Gea – suffered an injury while playing for Spain during their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden. As a direct result, Sergio Romero will make his first start in the Premier League this season on October 20, 2019.
Former Liverpool man believes that it might be a good thing and that Sergio Romero can more than hold his own in the Manchester United goal.
‘I’ve analyzed him and there are a few ‘keepers who are highly-rated who just put the ball out there in a general area. But he’s as good as Ederson and Alisson using his left foot and right foot,’ he told Goal.
‘David de Gea is, of course, the No 1, but I looked at Romero when Manchester United bought him and I was amazed at how good the guy is with his feet – then I saw an improvement in De Gea.
‘What you tend to find is when you’ve got two ‘keepers or two players training with each other day in, day out, you start picking up positive habits from the other player.
There is statistical evidence United’s results are actually better with the 32-year-old in goal instead of De Gea and his 28 clean sheets for the club include the 2017 Europa League final win against Ajax.
The 32-year-old isn’t short of experience playing in big games. Romero played a pivotal role in Argentina’s road towards the 2014 FIFA World Cup final. The Argentinean has been hailed as the best back up goalkeeper in the league since he signed for United on a free transfer in 2015.
