Smalling and Roma struggling to agree on terms

Chris Smalling has featured in the recent training sessions Manchester United have had at Carrington since his return to England. The centre-back had a great season on-loan at AS Roma, was believed to join them permanently this summer. But it is now being reported by Angelo Mangiante of Sky Sports that Roma’s confidence has faded away as United haven’t responded and Smalling wants a four-year deal.

Chris Smalling, Manchester United and AS Roma all want the player to join the Italian club but haven’t reached an agreement yet.  Reportedly Smalling wants a four-year deal at AS Roma, but the club is only offering him a three-year contract. Sighting his age, this might be Smalling’s final long-term deal in Europe and thus he wants a longer contract.

The former United captain is valued at about €20m by United, who want him to be sold this summer. Solskjaer doesn’t see Smalling in his future plans and could use the money generated by his sale elsewhere. It is still very likely for Smalling to join AS Roma as he is reportedly their priority signing this summer transfer window.

Manchester United and Smalling must find a way quickly for the player to depart to Roma, as it will be fruitful for all parties involved.
