Anthony Martial was last season’s top scorer for Manchester United in all competitions but the Frenchman hasn’t had a great start to this season. Including the red card against Tottenham, Martial has also looked off-colour and has lacked goals in him. In his recent pre-match press conference, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Anthony Martial saying he hasn’t had much time after almost any pre-season.
Martial was wasteful in front of goal a couple of nights earlier, as he missed a sitter and also looked disinterested. He hasn’t looked like a striker who scored 23 goals last season and is currently doesn’t look like a Manchester United striker. The United No.9 has got a lot of stick for his recent performances, but Solskjaer still backs him to be successful.
In his press conference, Solskjaer said: “Anthony did really develop last season. I thought he made big strides towards becoming the striker we know he can be. But Anthony is no different from other players in our team [in] that he’s not had a pre-season as normal, and he’s working to get to his peak form.”
Martial needs to get his act right at Manchester United and turn into a consistent goalscorer for the Red Devils. Solskjaer also needs to make sure the Frenchman isn’t let off the hook as Martial seems to be very inconsistent and shows flashes of his best. The Frenchman is very talented but to spearhead the attack for one of the best clubs in the world, he needs to get goals consistently.
