Opinion: Van De Beek did the right thing by joining Everton on Loan

Manchester United got in Van De Beek for a fee of around 32 million pounds just after the season Ajax shocked the world. Who would have thought that a team like Ajax could soar so high, beating Juventus and Real Madrid in the same Champions League season? Certainly, no one did. Donny played a crucial role in Ajax’s successful season controlling the game from the centre midfield position. After such a brilliant performance throughout the season, it lured United to sign him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave him the United debut under the lights of Old Trafford. He came on late that evening and scored the only goal for United saving United from an embarrassing night against the fearful Palace side. However, the match ended with United losing by a 3-1 margin on the opening day of the campaign. The 24-year-old in the 2020/21 season tried his best to display his masterclass performance but suffered from problem of lack of game time. Ole played a 4-2-3-1 formation which made it very difficult for him to fit into the starting 11. With the presence of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes there was no vacancy for Donny.

Donny is a kind of player who needs to start the game from the very beginning. Another reason why Paul Pogba starts over him is due the defensive abilities that he possesses, unlike Donny. On the other hand, Van De Beek is much better suited to intricate passing to feet, favouring-fast moving game and a good positioning. Even after Ragnick being appointed as the manager of United, the same thing happened. Fitting into this system is not easy as the whole formation would change resulting in the change in tactics. It’s a very arduous job for the manager and there’s still a tinge of uncertainty, whether it would reap the right results or not.

With United’s current form, the team has sunk deep into the ocean due to the defensive incapability under which Maguire, Fred and Mctominay are to be blamed. If the case would have been that Van De Beek switched roles with either of Fred or Mctominay then United’s downfall wouldn’t have occurred. Unfortunately, Van De Beek can’t play the role of a CDM. The best United could do was to send him on loan to some Premier League club. For this very reason Ragnick did the right job of sending him to Everton.
