It was reported earlier this week that Donny Van de Beek has officially joined Manchester United FC on a five-year contract from Ajax. The deal happened very quickly, mainly due to the likes of Edwin Van der Sar, Ajax’s CEO and former United legend. Last night, Van de Beel revealed that many teams wanted his signature, especially Tottenham, who used Steven Bergwijn to lure Van de Beek.
It was earlier reported that the Dutchman was linked to Barcelona, Real Madrid and even Tottenham. Tottenham and Jose Mourinho were interested in signing Van de Beek and had even reportedly launched an 11th-hour bid, unsuccessfully. But Matt Judge, who is United’s chief negotiator, moved quickly to complete the move to secure Van de Beek’s signature.
Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad [A Dutch daily newspaper], Van de Beek said: “Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs, but I chose United.” He also explained “I felt ready for the next step. This was the time to go. That is why I was on the phone with my agent last weekend. In the end, there was an agreement.”
Van de Beek will provide the much-needed depth and quality to the United midfield and is expected to become a successful signing in the future.
