Manchester United pursuing a move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

According to a report from The Athletic, Manchester United might consider pursuing a transfer for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins due to financial constraints limiting their options in the summer window.

Initially, the Red Devils had shown interest in signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, but they have now withdrawn their pursuit due to the substantial expenses associated with the deal.

United is hesitant to engage in prolonged negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy and is now exploring alternative options in the transfer market.

While Rasmus Hojlund has been linked to a move to Old Trafford recently, it is unlikely to materialize due to the high price tag set by Atalanta, with the player’s representatives stating an £85 million valuation.

United is not willing to pay such a substantial amount for a relatively unproven young striker.

In light of these circumstances, it is reported that United has expressed interest in Aston Villa’s standout player, Ollie Watkins, and has been closely monitoring his performances.

The 27-year-old had an impressive run of form towards the end of the previous season, contributing 16 goals and six assists across all competitions. While Watkins still has two years remaining on his contract, discussions are underway for a potential long-term extension.

The English star established himself as one of the top strikers in the league following his impressive performances in the Premier League after the World Cup. With 13 goals and three assists in 23 appearances, he played a crucial role in Aston Villa’s successful seventh-place finish.

Considering his significant contributions, Villa is unlikely to let him leave for a low fee this summer. With two years remaining on his contract, they have some leverage to negotiate the asking price.

While Watkins is currently valued at £27 million, Villa could demand a much higher fee in the range of £50-60 million for their prized asset.

Erik Ten Hag may be interested in acquiring a proven Premier League striker. However, the question arises as to whether United would be willing to make such a substantial investment for Watkins’ services.

Despite consistently reaching double figures in terms of top-flight goals over the past three seasons, Watkins has yet to surpass 15 goals in a single campaign.

If United aims to compete for the league title next season, they may need a more reliable and prolific striker leading their frontline.
