As stated by Manchester Evening News, former Manchester United and Liverpool star Michael Owen has aimed a sly dig on the Red Devil’s past summer recruits.
United have spent over £1.5 billion in the past ten years and have grabbed a profit of £470 million according to CIES Football Observatory. This accounts for more than £1 billion being added in signing players and such a huge sum will raise questions over the club’s performances over the years.
Erik ten Hag has been able to overturn the fate this summer by signing top class talents, even if it has costed them a fortune. With an impressive start to the league season, many will point fingers on Owen’s comments but the past horrors of the transfer window cannot be ignored.
Owen, who has featured in 52 games for United, was a pundit for BT Sport for Liverpool’s clash against Ajax. He was talking about Liverpool signing world-beaters while aiming a dig on United’s poor record in the transfer window.
He said:
“Liverpool over the years, no matter who they’ve signed, have been world beaters, then teams like Manchester United over the last 10 years no matter who they’ve signed look like they’ve never played football before it’s changed now.”
“But what I’m trying to say is it’s very easy to bring a player into the team or for all the players to play well at the same time it is a team game.”
Manchester United have made a promising start this time and it has been powered by Ten Hag’s clever transfer window tactics. Signing Antony, Casemiro, Cristian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, Martin Dubravka and Lisandro Martinez has brought back the winning atmosphere to Old Trafford.
As things stand, the club could be planning for more additions next summer as they will be witnessing more outgoings in January. A number of unwanted stars have left the club and the board has been ruthless in tearing up contracts of players who are not a part of their plans.
